Pieter Wolters, President
& CEO
In July 2008, Pieter Wolters joined the seed investors of the company to establish OrthAlign Inc. as President and CEO. Prior to OrthAlign, Pieter served as President & CEO of IsoTis, Inc., an orthopedics company based in Irvine, CA, from July 2004 until January 2008. During his tenure, sales increased from $25 million to well over $40 million, the company was listed on NASDAQ and acquired by Integra LifeSciences, Inc. Pieter joined IsoTis during its inception in The Netherlands in 1997 and was the company’s CFO while the company went public and did two cross border M&A transactions. Earlier in his career, Pieter gained extensive corporate finance and management experience in different European countries and in the US. Pieter received his law degree from Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 1989.
Andy Ramans, Vice President,
Operations
Andy Ramans joined OrthAlign in
October 2009. Andy has over 15 years of engineering
and operations management experience. Prior to
joining OrthAlign, Andy held the positions of
Director of Operations at GlimmerGlass and Director
of Manufacturing at Omnicell. Andy has also held
senior engineering and manufacturing positions with
numerous product development teams, including those
at Intuitive Surgical, Novellus Systems and METCAL.
Andy received an MBA from Santa Clara University, an
MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford
University, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering and
Materials Science from University of California at
Davis.
Gary Scheel, Vice President, Sales
Gary Scheel joined OrthAlign in April 2009. Gary has more than twenty-five years of experience in selling and marketing orthopedic medical devices. His senior management experience spans large and small companies including Smith & Nephew, OsteoBiologics, Inc. Regeneration Technologies, Inc. and Orthopaedic Biosystems Ltd. Gary is recognized for his excellent track record in building dynamic and successful sales teams. Over the last ten years he has been instrumental in the success of several start up companies. Gary holds a BA degree from Lakeland College, Sheboygen, Wisconsin.
Nick Van der Walt, Director,
Engineering
Nick van der Walt joined OrthAlign
in August 2008. Nick has over 15 years of project
management and medical device product development
experience. Prior to joining OrthAlign, Nick was the
founder and CEO of a start-up venture based in South
Africa. Earlier, Nick held the role of Director of
R&D for Cryogen where he held the overall
engineering and R&D responsibility. After Cryogen
was sold to American Medical Systems, Nick
maintained his position as R&D Director and was
responsible for the strategic planning of new
product development activities and growth of his
business unit. Nick has a track record of
successfully leading the introduction of new
products to market and possesses a number of patents
and patent applications. Nick holds a Masters degree
in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
David Carreras, Corporate Controller
David Carreras joined OrthAlign in January 2010. He brings financial and commercial experience to his role as Controller. Prior to joining OrthAlign, he held the position of Controller, for Interventional Spine, an early stage, commercial medical device company. While at Interventional Spine, David participated in a $24M financing and managed all finance and administrative functions during the company’s growth from $500K to $10MM sales. Before joining I-Spine, David was the Principal of his own consulting firm that provided accounting, financial, and ERP implementation management for medical device companies in Orange County. Prior to owning his own consulting firm, David held finance positions at large and small companies. David holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, from California State University, Fullerton.
Faranak Gomarooni, Regulatory/Quality Manager
Faranak Gomarooni joined OrthAlign in May 2010. Faranak has over 10 years of experience in Material and Process Engineering as well as Quality Management Systems. Prior to joining OrthAlign, Faranak held a Quality Manager position at Terumo CVS. Faranak holds several certifications in Quality Management Systems including CQE, CBA, CSSBB and RABQSA. For last two consecutive years, Faranak has been the Chair of ASQ Southern California Discussion Group and currently holds the position of the Program Chair for SCDG. Faranak holds a BS in Chemical Engineering and a BS in Chemistry from University of California, Irvine.
Sandy Guzman, Marketing Associate
Sandy Guzman joined OrthAlign in January 2009 and serves the company in a product marketing management role. Over the course of her career she has developed broad expertise in sales, marketing, and human resources. Prior to joining OrthAlign, Sandy was a manager at OCTANe, an organization focused on entrepreneurship and company development for Orange County's IT and biomedical industries. While at OCTANe, Sandy was responsible for developing TalentEngine, an online job board connecting technical talent with local IT and biomedical companies; and OCTANe Next, a program for young professionals to integrate into OC’s high tech business community. Prior to OCTANe, Sandy was a HR Representative for ITT Corporation - Marine & Leisure. In her role, she successfully helped to integrate two business units during a restructuring and closures of two manufacturing plants. Sandy started her career in 2002 at medical device company GenSci OrthoBiologics that later became IsoTis, Inc. She holds a BA in Psychology, from California State University, Fullerton.
Darius Kharabi, Marketing Manager
Darius Kharabi joined OrthAlign in June 2009 and serves the company in program management, marketing, finance and legal roles. Darius has consulted to a number of organizations in the medical device space, including ExploraMed, Medtronic, Obalon Therapeutics and Okapi Venture Capital. Darius started his career as a corporate attorney in the Technology Transactions Group of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in 2004 counseling public and private medical device and biotechnology companies on deal structures and assisting in their negotiation. Darius has published several articles covering topics in medical device company incubation and venture capital, biotechnology licensing and biochemistry research. Darius received a BS in Biochemistry from Georgetown University, and holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a JD from Stanford Law School.
